Athens proper is perpetually percolating with a thriving culinary scene, unique shops and a bevy of cultural offerings. Add to that the water sports, beaches, lakes and hills all accessible by public transportation or a short car ride from pretty much anywhere. The weather in Athens is generally mild, and even in the winter blue skies and sunshine are frequent. It is therefore an attractive place to visit year-round, although the seaside excursions tend to be the most pleasant from May to October.
Stroll along the wide pedestrian sidewalks in the area of the Acropolis, below the Parthenon.
Explore the indie bakeries, herb shops, cafés, galleries and small shops from Plaka to Koukaki.

The breathtaking beauty from Vouliagmeni to Cape Sounio, stopping to swim along the way – the Vouliagmeni lake’s hot springs are pleasant any time of the year – and enjoy a late lunch, Greek style, at one of the fish taverns facing the Temple of Poseidon.
Taking a step back in time, dining and strolling in cheap and cheerful Pireaus and Microlimano.
Going to one of the classic open-air cinemas in the “hipstorical” center (one is in Thissio and the other in Plaka)

The new Renzo Piano-designed Stavros Niarchos complex, canvasing the National Opera and the National Library, surrounded by a vast outdoor park and gardens.

Don’t go to the beach on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.
Make a day trip to Aegina for pistachios and an authentic local feeling, just an hour from Athens by ferry.
In between museums and sightseeing, stroll through the National Gardens and dine like a local in one of the remaining culinary institutions that have discretely served Athenian aristocrats, politicians and international movie stars since the 1920s.

IF YOU LOVE CULTURE Attend a performance, a concert or even take a yoga class at the Onassis Cultural Center at Syngrou. See international contemporary art in a former brewery – and stop for raki or ouzo in one of the neighboring small plates.
